End-of-School-Year Recycling Tips

As the school year winds down, students may find themselves with an abundance of leftover school supplies. Luckily, there’s plenty to do with used supplies like pencils, glue bottles, binders, pens, and small electronics.

As more companies set environmental goals, more eco-friendly products are hitting the shelves. Purchase sustainable, recyclable materials made from plants, such as DBA pens. Made from potatoes, DBA pens are 98 percent compostable and are a safe alternative to regular pens.

Title 1 schools often enroll low-income students and are always in need of school supplies. Donating used school supplies, whether to a Title 1 school, charity, or a friend in need, helps provide opportunities for more students and prevents these materials from ending up in landfills.

Recycling used school supplies is also an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of leftover supplies. Some plastics recycling facilities accept hard-to-recycle items such as binders and glue bottles that can be repurposed. Companies like Crazy Crayons accept donations of used crayons with legible labels to create non-toxic molds.

Small electronics such as tablets, e-readers, and even calculators that contain batteries can be dropped off at e-waste recycling centers to ensure they do not end up in landfills. Batteries are classified as hazardous waste and can be extremely dangerous to the environment and residential health if not disposed of properly.

For corporate offices and small businesses looking to dispose of electronics before the summer begins, ITAD facilities like HOBI partner with companies to provide IT asset management and disposition services, including top-tier data security and erasure, reverse logistics, and data center solutions.

HOBI is an R2v3, RIOS, WBE, and ISO-14001 certified IT asset management and disposition enterprise with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. We focus on maximizing economic return and mitigating environmental liability via e-waste recycling.
