ITAD Glossary
A certificate of destruction, also called a certificate of data destruction or certificate of sanitization, is a document from an ITAD or data destruction provider that records which devices were sanitized or destroyed, by what method, when and by whom. It is the evidence an organization keeps to show data was handled properly.
Certificate of destruction
Auditors, regulators and legal teams ask for it after equipment is retired. If a device later surfaces with data on it, the certificate is the first document anyone checks.

HOBI provides a Certificate of Destruction. Behind it, HOBI Shield records the serial numbers of each device and drive, the erasure process used, when each step started and finished, and any errors, and links that record to the asset’s full audit record.
Questions
Device-level serial numbers, the method and standard used, and a certified provider. A certificate that lists only weight or box counts proves little.
It is strongest alongside serialized tracking records and the provider’s certifications.
Follow your records retention policy and any regulations that apply to your data.
