What is serialized asset tracking?

Serialized asset tracking records each device by its serial number, rather than by weight or box count, at every step of the disposition process. It is what lets a provider prove exactly what happened to a specific laptop, drive or phone.

Serialized asset tracking

Why it matters for IT and security teams

Weight-based reporting cannot show that a specific device was wiped. When an auditor or a breach investigation asks about one asset, serialized records answer the question.

How it works

  • Serial numbers and asset tags are captured at pickup or receipt.
  • Hard drive serials are recorded separately from the devices they came from.
  • Test results, grade, sanitization result and final disposition are logged against each serial.
  • Clients receive device-level reports.

How HOBI handles it

HOBI records each device by serial number throughout the process and reports results per device. During erasure, HOBI Shield captures the manufacturer, model and serial number of each system and each drive and links them to the asset’s audit record.
