Data centers are driving the need for enhanced data security. Digital storage has replaced decades of filing cabinets, but data centers are vulnerable to digital data theft when they are retired. Because data is primarily stored digitally nowadays, it is easy to forget about the need for security after the equipment is retired, but data centers are just as vulnerable as other IT assets when improperly decommissioned.
IT asset disposition isn’t just getting rid of old IT assets. Coordinating with a trustworthy logistics team, identifying which assets can deliver greater value, increasing enterprise ROI, ensuring data remains secure throughout the process, and finding an ITAD provider with the right capabilities are crucial. With growing scrutiny from auditors, regulators, and ESG stakeholders, ITAD transparency is no longer a marketing claim; it’s an industry standard.
The rise of remote working began with the pandemic in 2020 and has since grown into a full-scale way of working. Most businesses have remote or hybrid employees, and schools switch to remote learning during inclement weather. The digital era has enabled remote working, helping the business world adapt to worldwide challenges, but it has also created new hurdles in the ITAD space.
2026 will be the year of new rules for the waste industry. Several new industry regulations will take effect in the new year, including the EU Waste Shipment Regulation, effective May 21, 2026, which will enforce tighter export limits and require record-keeping.
The holidays are typically a high-stress point for many businesses. Slowdowns create bottlenecks and delays, but they also create opportunities for IT work. Holiday slowdowns produce fewer users, lighter ticket volumes, fewer meetings, and more available facilities. This provides some downtime for IT upgrades, proactive maintenance, and strategic planning, especially for IT asset disposition. This is a time to reset asset controls, update inventory lists, and lay out a fresh ITAD plan for the new year. We’ve created an IT asset checklist to help you start 2026 clean, secure, and organized.
Businesses are expanding, and with it comes the need for customizable ITAD rollout management. IT asset disposition is typically a simple process for single-site management. Still, the growth of distributed workforces, acquisitions, retail footprints, healthcare systems, and data centers requires services for multi-site ITAD.
When decommissioning IT assets, there is much to discuss and many decisions to be made. This often leads to end-of-life hardware piling up while teams debate value, risk, and time. The longer assets sit idle, the more quickly their value depreciates, which is why disposal decisions should be made promptly and planned. IT asset disposition (ITAD) providers offer a clear disposition path with quick rules, an ITAD checklist, and a tool to help calculate asset value.
As the necessity of proper IT asset disposition continues to increase, ITAD vendors are facing more surprise audits, but why? First, rapidly evolving technology has thrust the world into a digital age, necessitating more stringent data security protocols. A digitally-driven era requires digital security to protect enterprise and employee data, and auditors are doubling down on industry standards.
