Winter Recycling Tips

Christmas recycling

Winter is here, meaning leaving anything outside can result in damaged materials, even recycled ones. We’ve provided some winter recycling tips below for all types of waste as the weather gets colder.

  • Avoid leaving recycling bags on the ground, especially during icy weather. Leaving recycling bags, garbage bags, or any other type of plastic bag directly on the ground enables the bags to freeze to the ground and can cause them to rip and spill materials everywhere.
  • It may be tempting to leave your recycling bags in the bins overnight, in case they are forgotten the following morning, but leaving recycled goods outside in cold weather could cause damage to materials inside, especially electronics. Sometimes, plastic bins can freeze shut, or snow and ice could knock them down, enabling critters to carry off recycled materials. Consider curbing recycling bags the morning they are scheduled for pick up to avoid such encounters.
  • Consider donating old appliances and electronics like smartphones, laptops, or even toasters rather than leaving them outside on the curb.
  • After the holidays, don’t throw out old Christmas plants, but rather, consider repurposing them for mulch, compost, or even wreaths for next year. Live Christmas trees can also be repurposed for firewood instead of throwing them away.
  • After years of reuse, Christmas lights can become broken and damaged, and many throw them away. However, Christmas lights are electrical and classified as e-waste. IT asset disposition facilities like HOBI collect retired electronics and e-waste and ensure they are disposed of correctly via electronics recycling.

HOBI is an R2v3, RIOS, and ISO-14001 certified IT asset management and disposition enterprise with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. We focus on maximizing device value and mitigating environmental liability at every step of the disposition process.
