Happy Valentine’s Day! As you recover from Super Bowl weekend and finalize Valentine’s Day plans, consider making this year’s festivities eco-friendly. Whether treating yourself or your significant other to the newest smartphone or upgrading to a larger T.V. screen for next year’s game, it’s important to remember to dispose of your old electronics properly. Disposition isn’t typically the first thing that comes to mind when unwrapping a brand-new device, but we’re here to tell you why you should love electronics recycling.

There are many benefits to recycling your old electronics, both for you and for the environment. For example, when electronics are left in landfills for long periods, certain chemicals will soak into the soil. They can contaminate the groundwater, eventually contaminating the surrounding drinking water supply. Not only will this cause animals to get sick, but it will also pollute the drinking water of surrounding residents and can cause severe health issues if exposed for too long. Incineration pollutes the air with toxic fumes that can also cause health issues for those living there. As an alternative, recycling prevents air and water pollution and helps preserve the natural resources, energy, and raw materials needed to manufacture new devices.

Recycling your electronics also ensures that your personal information is in the right hands. Many IT asset disposition enterprises like HOBI International wipe all residual data from a device before processing. Many don’t consider data security when they retire a piece of equipment, whether a personal device or an office computer. Still, data lingers on devices long after you reset them. Recycling prevents potential data breaches for all devices.

If you’re simply upgrading, and your old electronic devices still have some life left in them, consider donating them to someone in need to help reduce purchasing brand-new devices. This also decreases the amount of materials needed to make new electronics. For example, electronics stores like Best Buy had televisions on sale for the Super Bowl weekend. If you purchase a larger screen to watch the game, post-Super Bowl recycling helps reduce the amount of e-waste generated each year and helps keep electronics out of landfills and incinerators.
