What is a Digital Product Passport?

DPPs will be accessible by scanning a QR code or NFC chip with a smartphone, enabling any smartphone user to view product details at any time. While the Digital Product Passport itself is a new mandatory test for EU businesses, the Electronics Delegated Act is the specific law that makes the DPP mandatory for electronics. The EDA functions as a customized rulebook specifically for tech products. Because different products require different rules and information, the EDA bridges the DPP rulebook and electronics. The EDA defines the “scanners,” deciding how users will access the passport on electronic devices; dictates the unique data fields, which forces companies to list things like software update guarantees and raw materials sources; and it coordinates the “Right to Repair,” outlining repair information inside the passport and repairability scores.

The OEM Challenge: Why Global Alignment is Inevitable
While DPPs are still technically an EU initiative, U.S. involvement is on the horizon, and companies should prepare for digital passports to hit their IT assets in the near future. Legally speaking, the Digital Product Passport is strictly an EU initiative, but several factors make global alignment inevitable.
Global Supply Chain Reality – Multinational OEMs such as Apple, Microsoft, and Ford design, manufacture, and ship products worldwide. The U.S. market is already steadily aligning with DPP elements rather than inventing new systems unique to U.S. standards.

The introduction of digital product passports fundamentally shifts end-of-life data, eliminating the guessing game and transforming it into a transparent, verifiable product ledger. This especially helps end-of-life facilities because rather than sifting through a box of mixed materials that may or may not contain toxic components, the DPP will explicitly state which products contain toxic material, the amount of recoverable material each device contains, and how to recycle it.
