Valentine’s Day is upon us! Amid the festivities, remember to keep the environment in mind. Whether you or your significant other are treating yourself to the newest smartphone or upgrading to a larger TV screen, responsible IT asset disposition is critical to protecting the environment and reducing e-waste. Proper disposition is important for many reasons, and we’ve provided some tips on how to show love for the environment this Valentine’s Day with electronics recycling.

Recycling is the Best Method for E-Waste Disposal

There are several disposal methods for e-waste, including landfills and incineration. However, partnering with an ITAD provider like HOBI mitigates environmental pollution by recycling retired IT assets rather than throwing them out with municipal waste or burning them. When electronics sit in landfills for too long, toxic chemicals leak from the manufactured metals and soak into the soil, eventually leading to groundwater contamination. Many electronics used daily also contain lithium-ion batteries that could cause chemical fires and lead to a domino effect if other batteries are nearby. Burning IT hardware causes these chemicals to be released into the atmosphere and results in air pollution. Both disposition methods have led to significant health issues for surrounding residents.

Proper IT asset disposition with an ITAD provider ensures clients that no harm is coming to the environment, helps reduce e-waste by keeping devices in circulation, and supports a circular economy.

Other Environmentally-Friendly Gift Ideas

  1. Flowers are a staple for Valentine’s Day, but many bouquets have been transported a long way before they arrive at the store, leaving behind a large carbon footprint for a gift that will only last a few days. Potted plants are an excellent alternative because they will last much longer and do not require constant replacement.
  1. Chocolates and other sweets are also traditional Valentine’s Day gifts. Consider buying from companies that implement environmentally sound packaging methods or source cocoa responsibly.
  1. Rather than store-bought cards made from trees, consider a homemade card from recycled paper to help preserve natural resources.
  1. Many wrapping paper brands contain materials such as foil or glitter, making them non-recyclable. If you opt for a store-bought gift that needs wrapping, consider using recyclable wrapping paper that is made purely from paper or use other materials such as newspaper, fabric, cardboard boxes, or even glass jars that are all reusable.

Help protect the environment and keep this Valentine’s Day green.
