The long-running E-Reuse Conference (ERC) was recently acquired by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), which administers the R2 certification standard. SERI announced the acquisition Feb. 2 and changed the name of the conference to the Electronics Sustainability Summit.

The E-Reuse conference is an annual repair-focused event that first launched in 2010 as the International Computer Refurbisher Summit before evolving to ERC. The conference focuses on repair, reuse and remarketing devices, and addresses different parts of electronics recovery.

SERI’s executive director Corey Dehmey said, “We are very excited to add a conference to our growing list of SERI programs, all focused on the goal of driving electronics sustainability around the world.”

According to Dehmy, the event “provides a platform for us to build upon to engage the entire electronics industry around the topic of sustainability.” SERI wants the new summit to focus on sustainability throughout the entire device lifecycle.

“When I thought about the future of ERC and how it might continue to evolve, SERI felt like the perfect organization to take it to the next level,” said Sarah Kim, head of E-Reuse Services. “I couldn’t be more excited to work with SERI to build the Electronics Sustainability Summit with that shared vision in mind.” Kim refers to the acquisition as the next stage in the evolution of the reuse event.

Benefits of Device Reuse

Mobile devices are among the most utilized electronics in the world. Many families own more than one phone, tablet, or iPad. Manufacturing new devices requires more raw materials to be used, which is why some ITAD facilities offer mobile repair and reuse options.

Reusing IT assets helps prevent them from entering the waste stream and extends their life spans. Remarketing or donating used devices provides a cost-effective alternative to purchasing brand-new devices for those looking to save money. Purchasing used mobile devices helps reduce the need for more devices to be manufactured and, therefore, the amount of raw materials used.

When IT assets cannot be repaired for reuse, they are recycled efficiently, focusing on eliminating potential environmental liability. HOBI International, Inc. is a premier IT asset disposition enterprise that offers a full range of ITAD services, including Mobile Lifecycle Management for Mobility Managed Services, with repair and resale options for mobile devices. HOBI focuses on maximizing economic return and prioritizes contributing to reducing the carbon footprint through reuse and e-recycling.
