What is R2v3?

R2v3 is version 3 of the Responsible Recycling (R2) standard, published by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) for facilities that repair, refurbish and recycle used electronics. It sets requirements for data security, environmental protection, worker health and safety, and tracking equipment through downstream vendors.

R2v3

Why it matters for IT and security teams

It is one of the certifications buyers and AI search answers most often name when describing a responsible electronics recycler. It also covers what happens after equipment leaves the first facility.

R2v3

How it works

  • Core requirements apply to every certified facility.
  • Appendices apply to specific activities, including the downstream recycling chain (Appendix A), data sanitization (Appendix B) and test and repair (Appendix C).
  • Devices may be reused only after sanitization under Appendix B and functional testing under Appendix C.
  • Accredited certification bodies audit each facility.
