As April 22 approaches, many companies participate in special collection events and implement sustainability initiatives in preparation for Earth Day. Sustainability awareness is growing, and as environmental practices are thrust into the spotlight, some companies are accused of falsely portraying environmental policies or “greenwashing.” One way to establish credible environmental support is with responsible IT asset disposition. E-waste makes up 70 percent of the world’s toxic waste, and partnering with an ITAD provider will help reduce e-waste and protect enterprise data after asset retirement.
Data Security After Asset Retirement
IT assets typically become an afterthought upon retirement and end up piled in storage closets, taking up valuable storage space. Data security is just as important after assets are retired as when they are in use, potentially more so. IT assets such as desktops, printers, phones, laptops, and tablets store extensive amounts of data that remain on these devices until properly wiped. This means data is vulnerable wherever assets are stored until they are disposed of responsibly. ITAD providers offer data erasure to solve potential data leaks during disposition. HOBI uses an internally developed data erasure software, the HOBI Shield, that completely erases data from a device. Any devices that cannot be erased are destroyed via shredding technology to prevent further data leaks. Data erasure occurs before assets are processed but also contributes to the remarketing process.
Value Maximization
Not all assets are broken or damaged when retired; some can be repaired and refurbished for reuse. Asset redeployment supports a circular economy by circulating used assets rather than premature disposition. The goal of a circular economy is to eliminate waste through reuse and recycling, and by partnering with an ITAD provider for repair and remarketing services, companies will boost environmental credibility and achieve ESG goals.
E-Recycling
Proper IT asset disposition is critical to environmental protection, and electronics recycling is the only environmentally sound disposition method to ensure complete mitigation of environmental liability. Metals in electronics contain toxic chemicals that cause pollution in landfills and incinerators. Electronics also contain lithium-ion batteries, which have been the source of hundreds of battery fires, destroying numerous landfills and materials recovery facilities (MRFs).
HOBI is an R2v3, RIOS, WBE, and RIOS 14001 certified IT asset management and disposition enterprise with more than 30 years of industry experience. HOBI offers various end-of-use services, including e-recycling, to mitigate environmental liability.
By partnering with an ITAD provider for asset redeployment and e-recycling, companies are reducing their carbon impact, supporting a circular economy, and helping to eliminate e-waste.
