HOBI president and co-founder Craig Boswell testified this week before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Boswell addressed the needs of improving critical mineral recovery capacity through electronic waste, recycling, and reuse.
During the meeting, Boswell discussed the importance of the electronics recycling industry and the many challenges the industry faces, such as industry growth, changes to the Basel Convention laws, and the abundant use of Lithium-Ion batteries.
As part of his testimony, Boswell explained that electronics recycling companies help make the electronics manufacturing supply chain more sustainable. This includes testing and refurbishing products for redeployment and recovering the critical materials used to manufacture new products, including everything from cellphones to servers.
According to Boswell, the e-waste recycling industry is the key to closing the critical material supply chain. During his testimony, Boswell explained the importance of product design and how manufacturers must increase their focus on the sustainability of their products by incorporating Design for Recycling ® concepts at the earliest part of research and development to ensure these innovative products that improve our lives are easily disassembled, reused, and ultimately recycled. Designing these products for sustainability and recycling is good for the bottom line for the environment. Realizing the tremendous benefit that recovered products represent in the critical mineral supply chain is essential.
Joining Boswell on the panel were other industry executives, l including Ajay Kochhar, president, CEO and co-founder of Li-Cycle; Kitty Mcllroy, president of Maryland Recycling Network and Project Manager with Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority; and Charles Pellicane, executive vice president of business development and operations at Human-I-T.
With more than 30 years of experience in the electronics waste industry, HOBI prioritizes mitigating environmental liabilities during the IT asset disposition process and is committed to doing all possible to help reduce the amount of e-waste the world produces via electronics recycling.
E-waste is a growing crisis, and ITAD enterprises like HOBI help navigate hurdles such as data security and IT asset management for retired IT assets. As e-waste issues continue to grow, more obstacles arise, making the need for proper e-waste disposition even more critical.
