Experiencing technical issues with computers is something we all encounter at some point during the lifecycle of a computer. Some of those issues have simple solutions, and others lead to device retirement. Below is a list of some of the most common computer problems and possible solutions.

Computer Won’t Start

One of the most common computer issues is a computer that suddenly shuts off or will not start, often resulting from a failing power supply. Make sure the computer power cord is plugged in correctly, or test the power point with another working device to confirm whether it is the electrical supply or the device that is the problem.

Frozen Screen

Frozen computer screens are another common issue almost every electronics user has experienced. A frozen computer screen can indicate insufficient RAM, registry conflicts, corrupt or missing files, or spyware. Though it may seem simple, press the power button until the computer turns off, then restart it. This common solution for many electronic devices typically fixes minor problems.

Slow Performance

Computer performance can slow as a result of too many unwanted files, viruses, or registry issues, each of which has its solutions. Cleaning the computer’s hard drive of any unwanted or useless files can help improve the performance. Users can also install a firewall, antivirus, and anti-software tools or schedule regular registry scans to ensure no harm comes to the device that would cause slow performance.

Slow Internet

When surfing the internet, users may notice they’re often asked about cookies and may even accept them all to continue browsing. However, this could be why the device’s internet is slower than usual. Try clearing all cookies and internet temporary files regularly to improve internet speed. Resetting the router could also solve any internet speed issues.

Overheating

Overheating is caused by the computer generating excess heat during operation. This can be caused by an insufficient cooling system, clogged vents and ports, a faulty fan, or power surges. To avoid overheating in computers, make sure the power if turned off at the first sign of it getting warmer than usual. Give the device plenty of time to cool down before using it again. Cleaning the vents and ports regularly helps prevent overheating in computers. If this does not solve the issue, or it is recurring, check the fan to ensure it works properly.

If the computer is too old to receive updates and has come to the end of its useful life cycle, consider recycling it. ITAD facilities like HOBI collect retired IT assets and ensure  they are disposed of properly..

HOBI is an R2v3, RIOS, WBE, and ISO-14001 certified IT asset management and disposition enterprise with more than 30 years of industry experience. HOBI focuses on maximizing economic return and device value and mitigating environmental liability via electronics recycling.
