Recycling is often an afterthought or put on the back burner due to beliefs that consumer contribution doesn’t matter. Proper e-waste disposition is crucial to keeping the environment safe and healthy as technology evolves. Electronic waste isn’t like other waste and cannot be tossed out with the trash. Below are some tips for e-recycling and how they can help make the world a more sustainable place.

There are many benefits to recycling. First, it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators. When waste is left in landfills for too long, the lack of oxygen causes bacteria to produce methane gas, a highly flammable gas that becomes dangerous when it collects underground. When waste is incinerated, the air is poisoned with toxic fumes.

Recycling also conserves natural resources and increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials. Reuse is also helpful. Reusing materials at hand prevents pollution by reducing the need for new raw materials. Reducing or eliminating the need to make materials from scratch saves energy, supports manufacturing, and conserves valuable resources. Last, when you recycle, you’re helping expand the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States and creating new jobs.

Ways to recycle e-waste:

  • Look for electronics drop-off sites near you to dispose of unwanted electronics. E-waste drop-offs will take e-waste to disposition facilities like HOBI to ensure they are responsibly disposed of.
  • Donate used electronics to those in need via electronics donation programs. ITAD facilities like HOBI often provide donation opportunities that help extend the life cycle of recycled materials.
  • Although new devices are always tempting to invest in, device reuse prevents e-waste from entering the waste stream and maximizes device value. Many devices have life left long after they are retired. Consider reusing used electronics with siblings, friends, or relatives rather than discarding them entirely.

IT asset disposition facilities like HOBI collect unwanted or retired IT assets and ensure they are disposed of properly via electronics recycling. HOBI focuses on maximizing device value and offers refurbishment and remarketing opportunities for devices that have yet to reach the end of their useful life.
