Device reuse plays a key role in a circular economy, providing an alternative purchasing channel to new devices and helping to protect the environment. Keeping IT assets up to date can become costly over time, especially when new models are released each year. IT asset disposition provides a second chance for some electronics through device reuse, which is increasingly preferable to purchasing new devices.
E-Scrap News and consulting firm Compliance Standards recently surveyed industry leaders about multiple topics for the second quarter of 2023 and provided some insights taken away from the report. According to the 2023 Q2 report, 40 percent of revenue was unanimously reported to have come from the sale of used devices when participants were asked about revenue sources.
When ITAD facilities collect retired IT assets, devices that have not yet reached the end of their useful life are often repaired and refurbished for remarketing opportunities. With the price of electronics increasing each year, remarketing used devices provides an alternative sales channel for those looking to save money on used devices rather than purchasing new ones.
Reused devices also contribute to the circular economy by keeping retired electronics in circulation as long as possible. The idea of a circular economy is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce the amount of waste the world creates, reuse materials, recycle what cannot be reused, and eliminate waste. Many consumers toss old electronics in the trash or let them collect dust in a drawer. Reusing old electronics extends the device’s lifecycle and helps reduce the demand for new devices to be manufactured, which helps reduce the need to mine more metals and preserve resources.
Additionally, device reuse helps protect the environment by keeping electronics out of landfills. Many are unaware of the toxic chemicals that leak from the metals when e-waste is left in landfills for too long. The chemicals can soak into the soil and pollute groundwater, eventually affecting the surrounding water supply.
Retiring mobile devices doesn’t mean they cannot still be of use, and ITAD enterprises like HOBI ensure that viable devices receive remarketing opportunities to maximize their value.
