With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, this is the time to prioritize the environment while considering gifts. Sustainability is achieved one step at a time, and choosing an environmentally-friendly Mother’s Day gift helps protect the ecosystem while celebrating mothers worldwide on this special day. Below are some eco-friendly gift ideas to help keep this Mother’s Day green.

Get Your Hands Dirty

Because Mother’s Day typically falls in late spring, gardening is often a popular choice for a Mother’s Day activity. This is a great time to get in the dirt and help turn over soil, transplant seedlings, mulch, build raised beds, or even build an irrigation system. Gardening is an excellent way to share an experience with mom while protecting the environment.

Shop & Dine Locally

Flowers are a popular gift choice; they’re easy to pick up and usually well-received. However, larger bouquets come with a price paid by the environment as they are shipped hundreds or even thousands of miles away, significantly increasing carbon output. Picking your own wildflower bouquet or even shopping at a local flower farm helps reduce the global carbon footprint by reducing logistics emissions.

Brunch is a tradition many people look forward to sharing on Mother’s Day, and dining at a restaurant that sources ingredients locally also helps reduce global emissions. Homemade meals are a great alternative to going out, and using homegrown ingredients is another way to reduce the global carbon footprint.

Plants that Last

Flowers are always lovely, but many bouquets have been transported a long way before they arrive at the store, leaving behind a large carbon footprint for a gift that will only last a few days. Potted plants such as succulents and cacti are an excellent alternative because they will last much longer and do not require constant replacement.

Homemade Gifts

An alternative to buying a brand-new gift is creating a DIY gift. This is a cost-effective way to show love for your mother without wasting valuable resources. Eco-friendly photo books, bird feeders, compost bins, or a self-care basket with homemade eco-friendly products are all eco-friendly ways to contribute to environmental protection this Mother’s Day.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Rather than store-bought cards made from trees, consider a homemade card from recycled paper to help preserve natural resources. Many wrapping paper brands contain materials such as foil or glitter, making them non-recyclable. If you opt for a store-bought gift that needs wrapping, consider using recyclable wrapping paper that is made purely from paper or use other materials such as newspaper, fabric, cardboard boxes, or even glass jars that are all reusable.

Environmental protection is crucial in everyday life, no matter the occasion.
