On-site vs off-site data destruction: what is the difference?

On-site data destruction erases or destroys drives at the customer’s location, before equipment leaves the building. Off-site destruction takes place at the ITAD provider’s secure facility after the equipment is transported under a documented chain of custody. Many organizations use both.

On-site vs off-site data destruction

Why it matters for IT and security teams

The choice balances control against cost and scale. On-site removes transport risk and lets your team watch. Off-site handles large volumes more efficiently and keeps your floor space free.

On-site vs off-site data destruction

How it works

  • On-site: erasure stations or mobile shredding at your location, often witnessed, with each drive logged.
  • Off-site: secured transport, serialized receiving, then erasure or destruction at the facility.
  • Both should end with a certificate that lists each device by serial number.
