Many companies are becoming more aware of their carbon footprint and trying to be more environmentally conscious. However, many are unaware that a digital footprint can be just as detrimental to the environment. Though businesses are now more vocal about environmental concerns, many are accused of not following through with green policies because of their digital footprints.
Research firm Blancco recently released a study in which they surveyed 1,800 high-level IT or compliance managers from companies around the world and found that 39 percent of businesses claiming environmental sustainability did not have a plan to reduce their data footprint. A press release Blancco says this leaves them “at risk of compliance failures in light of upcoming sustainability regulations.”
The press release also noted, “with a global push for better environmental stewardship from all industries, regulators are cracking down on green efforts that sound impressive but do very little and fall into the greenwashing category.”
A previous report found that when organizations switched to cloud-based storage, 65 percent of those surveyed reported an increase in the volume of redundant, obsolete, or trivial data collected.
“Hoarded data also comes with an environmental cost: both the e-waste produced by the need to source and replace hardware and the energy costs necessary to power both on-premise and cloud infrastructure,” the report stated.
The report suggested reducing redundant, obsolete, or trivial data, limiting e-scrap generation, and working with partners that are also sustainability-focused. IT asset disposition providers like HOBI are end-of-use service providers that collect retired IT hardware for responsible disposition.
