More companies are becoming environmentally conscious, and making efforts to reduce waste. Tech giants like Apple and Samsung have implemented post consumer materials in manufacturing, reduced packaging or use recycled materials for packaging, and use recycled metals in manufacturing new devices. Others such as Amazon and eBay have announced similar refurbishment and certification programs, and Walmart is following their lead.
Walmart Restored enables consumers to purchase used, refurbished electronic devices and some small appliances, but the standards for eligibility are pretty high. In addition to having no cosmetic imperfections, all used devices must have 80 percent battery life or higher, no dead pixels, must be restored to the original factory setting and capable of upgrading to the latest OEM supported firmware. They must also be shipped with all accessories typically expected in a new device purchase. According to the company’s website, devices must be “professionally inspected and tested to work and look like new by top-rated, performance-managed suppliers.” Walmart is offering 90-day free returns on used, refurbished items.
General manager of Walmart Marketplace, Michael Mosser stated in a press release, “In a year when customers are looking for ways to save money, like-new refurbished products have become an increasingly popular way to cut down on costs without sacrificing quality.”
The Walmart Restored program is currently online only, but will be available in certain stores this fall. Sellers will be invited to the platform and can keep track of updates on the Walmart Restored program page.
The global waste crisis grows larger every year, with every batch of new devices that are manufactured. Plastic waste in particular is becoming a huge problem in oceans, and affecting ocean life. It’s important for companies that produce large amounts of waste to consider programs like Walmart Restored in order to help reduce the amount of waste the world generates every year. Reducing the amount of plastics we use, and the amount of new electronic devices that are manufactured will help bring us closer to a more sustainable future.
