Earlier today, ZDNet published an article detailing five common security mistakes when implementing IoT and mobile technologies in the enterprise. More businesses will continue to introduce IoT and mobile in their tech strategies more advanced devices are introduced, but enterprises are not always fully prepared to use these devices.
ZDNet lists the five major pitfalls in mobile and IoT security as:
- Using default passwords
- Failing to update devices
- Assuming enterprise mobility management (EMM) is enough
- Lacking a holistic security approach
- Leaving security as an afterthought
While these are prominent concerns when utilizing IoT and mobile devices in the enterprise, one major facet of connected device security occurs after a device is used. A recent study shows up to 40 percent of used devices contain personally identifiable information (PII) due to inadequate data erasure techniques. For this reason, top-notch data erasure is an imperative, but commonly overlooked, facet of IoT and mobile security.
Both IoT and mobile devices process substantial amounts of personal information that could be dangerous in the wrong hands, including banking information, account credentials, credit card information and vulnerable corporate files. If a device is not cleared properly, its data can be accessed by the next user.
The best way to ensure data is properly erased from connected devices is working with a certified ITAD provider. Working with an ITAD company that provides fully-documented data erasure guarantees all personal and corporate information is safely removed from devices that are no longer in use.
HOBI International, Inc. is an R2, RIOS, ISO 14001 and WBE certified IT asset management company. HOBI provides fully-traceable, in-house data erasure for mobile and IoT devices using our NIST-compliant HOBI Shield® software.
