How many times have you Googled a quick fix to a tech problem, maybe an internally damaged do-hopper, or a broken thing-a-majig causing problems within your device? Perhaps you’ve stood in line for hours at the repair shop for a diagnosis, only to be left with more questions than answers. We’ve all been there, but have no fear, HOBI International is here to provide you with as many answers as possible in a series of solutions for commonly asked tech questions, starting with what to do with a swollen laptop battery.
Problem: Of all the things that could be considered “swollen,” we’re sure you never imagined a laptop battery would make the list, but it’s actually a very common issue. Something most people don’t realize is that all batteries swell a little over time. The question is when does it become dangerous? Swollen batteries occur when the battery has expanded to the point of looking bloated or swollen, and can sometimes cause the keyboard, screen or touchpad to bulge as well, or even split open. There are several factors that can lead to battery swelling including manufacturing defects, age, excessive charging, and most often, heat.
Solution: Unfortunately, there’s no primary solution, but we’ve provided some tips on what to do with the device. First, it’s never safe or smart to continue using the device or to try to take the battery out. Laptops are typically manufactured with Lithium Ion batteries, which are known for causing fires or explosions when damaged. Once battery swelling starts, the only safe option is to have it removed as soon as possible and replaced if other parts of the device have not been damaged from the swelling. Because of potential explosions, swollen batteries cannot be thrown away like typical waste and should be removed by professionals trained to handle Lithium Ion batteries.
Repair shops and ITAD facilities are both capable of proper battery removal. Third-party repair shops may be able to save the device by removing and replacing the battery safely. IT asset disposition centers like HOBI collect old electronics and ensure that they are properly disposed of in a safe and eco-friendly manner. HOBI specifically offers repair and refurbishment services for all mobile devices and tablets, including battery removal and replacement.
