EPEAT, a Green Electronics Council program, announced the addition of mobile devices to their environmentally-friendly electronics registry on Monday. Previously, the EPEAT registry included computers, displays, TVs and imaging equipment.
The EPEAT program provides environmental ratings for electronics that “makes it easy to select high-performance electronics that meet an organization’s IT and sustainability goals.” These standards for EPEAT’s ratings include manufacturing sustainability, packaging, energy requirements, end-of-life management, use of substances and other environmentally-friendly checkpoints.
EPEAT’s smartphone registry includes the iPhone SE, 6s, 6s Plus, 7 and 7, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, and the LG G6. The Green Electronics Council indicated other phones from additional manufacturers will be added to the registry in the future.
