Senators Diane Feinstein and Richard Burr are in the process of drafting a bill in response to the ongoing case between the FBI and Apple. Text from the bill, titled “Compliance with Court Orders Act of 2016” appeared online last Thursday.
The bill requires companies to provide “responsive, intelligible information or data or appropriate technical assistance to a government pursuant to a court order.” This bill requires any data that is unintelligible, or encrypted, be made intelligible, or decrypted, in response to a court order.
The proposed bill does not include specific details about potential responses to violations or other technicalities at this time, but these may come later in the drafting process.
