International Data Corporation (IDC) reports smartphone sales are continuing to grow, while PC and tablet shipments are falling.
Overall, smartphone shipments have seen a 1.6 percent increase since this time in 2015. While this amount of growth may not be seen as substantial, carriers and manufacturers are implementing new programs to encourage device trade-ins. Along with these new programs, the publicity around the releases of the Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may encourage consumers to upgrade to these new devices.
While smartphone shipments are seeing slight growth, tablet shipments have fallen. IDC reports overall tablet shipments have decreased 11.5 percent, and will not see growth until 2018. Tablets’ longer lifespan may be responsible for the overall sales decline, but as more consumers use detachable tablets as their primary computing device, the shipments will increase.
