tabletgroupMicrosoft is expecting a steep increase in overall tablet market share thanks to a rising adoption rate of detachable devices. Detachables are hybrids between laptops and tablets.

IDC reports detachable device sales can expect sales growth up to 73 percent in 2016 alone, and overall shipments will reach 63.8 million by 2020. Detachables currently comprise around 8 percent of the tablet market, but will reach up to 30 percent by 2020.

Microsoft currently controls more than half of the detachable market, with 53 percent of devices being Windows machines. IDC anticipates this number will climb to 75 percent by 2020. With the increasing popularity of detachable devices, Microsoft will begin taking tablet market share away from other manufacturers.
