In July 2020, Sustainable Electronics Recycling (SERI) released R2v3, the first major revision of the R2 practices since 2013. As the highest quality standard certification in the sustainability space, R2v3 compliance can pave the way for achieving successful ESG criteria.
ESG criteria have gained traction in the business world as a popular industry standard for businesses to implement. ESG reporting provides insight and transparency for employees, customers, and investors about how a company performs regarding environmental, social, and governance issues.
Environmental ESG criteria examine what strategies are in place for potential environmental risks and how a company plans to manage or mitigate these risks. Many companies strive to reduce their carbon footprint, and achieving environmental ESG goals can help bring a business closer to mitigating environmental risks. One way to help ensure meeting ESG goals is through R2v3 compliance.
R2v3 is an updated version of the R2 certification, including tighter safety measures regarding data security and a more detailed description of services, such as a scope statement, process requirement, a list of other locations, etc. The revisions span ten different areas and include new safety measures.
One of the first revisions was environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) management system updates, focusing on safety measures like risk exposure, visual inspection, and sanitation of R2 facilities. Under the new R2v3 standard, companies are now required to periodically assess the risk of exposure to hazardous substances, and a visual inspection of all electronic devices and components for damage or other issues that may harm the environment or the health and safety of employees.
The ITAD industry operates to dispose of e-waste properly and to ensure it doesn’t end up in landfills.
