What sets your IT asset management and ITAD organization apart from the sea of others?
At HOBI International Inc., it’s our Responsible Recyclers (R2) certification.
Industry standards are an important part of insuring a level playing field within the ITAD industry. Companies requiring electronics recycling services need to be confident that their ITAD vendor is meeting standards for environmental compliance, safety, and worker health.
HOBI is a strong supporter of the R2-certification standards for electronics recyclers. In 2010, the industry began certifying electronics recyclers for the R2 Standard. Since then, nearly 400 electronics recycling facilities have been certified to the R2 Standard.
The R2 Standard focuses on the performance of electronics recyclers in the areas of:
- Environmental and public health
- Worker health and safety
- Security (data and facility)
R2-certified ITAD vendors display better management of items potentially hazardous to the environment or human health locally and overseas, while promoting reuse and recovery versus landfill or incineration.
Unfortunately, many ITAD vendors are not in compliance with environmental standards and regulations. Some electronics recyclers just do not want to shovel out the money to responsibly recycle e-waste, with the repercussions eventually relaying back onto your company.
What potential risks does your company face from partnering with a non-certified ITAD vendor?
- The risk of data exposure from improper data erasure
- The risk of paying fines and legal fees when your company is found to be non-compliant.
- The risk of reallocating company resources to avoidable remediation efforts.
- The risk of bad publicity and a loss of customer or investor confidence
It is not only beneficial but absolutely necessary for organizations to verify certifications presented by ITAD vendors as more and more reports of irresponsible, hazardous and illegal electronics recycling practices surface.
ITAD organizations, including HOBI, invest time, effort and funds into certifications that tell customers they and all of their downstream partners follow all state and federal laws for IT asset management and disposition, while providing safe and healthy workplace conditions.
Certification has become an industry baseline.
