Enterprises worldwide are deploying more mobile devices each year, thanks to the increasing sophistication of mobile technologies. Allowing employees to utilize the smartphone or tablet of their choice as a primary computing device brings opportunities for increased productivity and a decreased learning curve.
Increased mobile adoption is causing enterprises to turn to enterprise mobility management (EMM) solutions to simplify managing mobile assets. EMM, previously known as mobile device management (MDM), allows organizations to manage and monitor multiple employee devices of various makes and models.
“Being able to manage a broad device estate via EMM is a compelling proposition for organizations,” Adam Holtby, research analyst for Ovum, said. “Next-generation policy-management capabilities and the ability to derive meaningful context about not only the devices being used by an employee base, but also about the employees themselves, can be transformative for organizations.”
EMM solutions are not only capable of supporting tablets and smartphones, but a larger variety of connected devices. An EMM strategy can also be applied to new Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. IoT spending is anticipated to grow 17 percent during 2017 alone, and applying EMM solutions towards connected things cuts down on device orientation in order to focus on new data derived from connected devices.
“EMM solutions are well-positioned to support organizations in managing many of these connected things,” Holtby said. “This should help organizations in adopting a more strategic, less chaotic, proactive approach to how [IoT] can be effectively leveraged within the business environment.”
Looking forward, EMM providers will continue to grow their service capabilities beyond traditional MDM platforms. As technology grows in sophistication, its management systems will also mature. EMM services will continue to be an attractive solutions for enterprises utilizing multiple mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets and IoT technology, in order to maximize productivity, security and value.
