Packaging and Crating Technologies (PACT) and Fireproof Solutions have partnered to develop an agent to extinguish lithium-ion battery fires quickly, safely, and neatly. Battery fires are a significant concern in the e-waste industry, and many facilities are taking extra precautions to prevent such occurrences. This collaboration has created a potential solution in the form of Lion-X.
As the first specialized fire extinguishing agent that contains and destroys fires involving lithium-ion batteries, battery packs, and chargers, Lion-X contains a pre-mixed, water-based agent that forms a low-expansion foam from an aspirating nozzle. Lion X is compatible with portable and wheeled extinguishers for manual or automatic spraying It can also be piped directly, without foaming, into EV battery packs and energy storage system modules.
According to Fireproof Solutions CEO Dennis Rediker, Lion-X can stick to 3-D shapes, overhead surfaces, vertical surfaces, and easily penetrate small crevices. Lion-X can also halt thermal runaway events, which causes most lithium-ion battery fires.
“Additionally, when the fire is completely snuffed out, Lion-X only leaves behind a fine powder residue, which continues to cool surfaces and is easily washed off with a wet cloth or paper towel,” Rediker said. “Its flexibility and universality are revolutionary.”
A press release noted that the agent can put out lithium-ion fires over 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit within 30 seconds and contain toxic smoke while controlling fires fueled by other materials like wood, paper, and fiber. The powder residue is safe for skin and sewer systems.
Battery fires have destroyed hundreds of structures and are more difficult to extinguish due to their chemical properties. Once extinguished, lithium-ion battery fires can reignite hours or even days later. Industry insurance prices have increased, leading many facilities to take more precautions and practice battery fire safety.
IT asset disposition enterprises like HOBI provide ITAD services such as device repair and refurbishment, which often include battery removal. To avoid chemical fires and property damage, it is best to leave battery handling to trained professionals to ensure no damage occurs to IT assets or other equipment.
HOBI is an R2v3, RIOS, WBE, and ISO-14001 certified IT asset management and disposition enterprise with more than 30 years of industry experience. HOBI prioritizes the safety of employees with fire safety practices and special tools during the disposition process.
