Waste is so common today that for most, it’s rarely ever a consideration, however, it’s been a growing concern in the recycling industry for years. 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste is produced each year, some of which is food waste, and some of which is electronic waste. Landfills are only a temporary solution, but not a permanent fix for the amount of waste we generate. In a perfect world there would be no waste, and though the world is far from perfect, there is a way to eliminate waste.
The world currently uses a linear economy, which means we take, make and dispose of waste in various ways. Factories take raw materials and use them to make goods and products, then dispose of them, which creates more waste in the long run. A circular economy focuses on closing the loop by reusing materials instead of disposing of them. This enables the cycle to begin with refurbished and reused goods and products, and eliminates the need to extract raw materials.
Proper IT asset disposition is crucial in closing the loop in a circular economy. In order to reuse goods and products, they must first be properly disposed of. E-waste makes up 70 percent of the world’s toxic waste, and can cause health issues in surrounding residents when it is sent to landfills. ITAD facilities like HOBI function as the end of the circular loop by collecting old electronics and ensuring that they are properly disposed of via recycling. Recycling old, retired IT hardware provides material for reuse, and helps reduce the amount of raw materials required for manufacturing new devices.
Some ITAD enterprises offer repair and refurbishment services for select devices, and remarket used devices for resale. This helps close the loop by providing an alternative to purchasing brand new electronics. By recycling electronics and reusing that which still has life left, in addition to creating sales channels for used devices, the ITAD industry contributes to the elimination of electronic waste.
