In 2004, October was declared Cybersecurity Awareness Month to help spread awareness about the increasing threat of cyber crime. It may seem like a silly thought, or even impossible given how many beloved tech companies promise top-notch data security. However, the more sophisticated technology becomes the craftier hackers get, and they continue to evolve along with our gadgets. Technology has been a prevalent part of daily life for many years, but was thrust under the spotlight during the pandemic. Technology was used more than ever before in order to comply with social distancing regulations while also continuing daily life. This provided more opportunities for hackers.
A crucial piece of information many are unaware of is that just because a device has been reset or thrown out doesn’t mean the data is safe. Data remains on a device until it is completely wiped, and hackers can access a device even if it’s in a disposal bin.
Electronic waste is much different than average waste and cannot be thrown out with municipal waste without ending up in landfills and contaminating the environment. Some may not think of this as an issue–out of sight, out of mind–but when e-waste is sent to landfills the soil soaks up the chemicals that electronics leak, and those harmful chemicals then contaminate surrounding water supplies including drinking water. Long-term exposure to these chemicals can lead to extreme illness and fatal health issues.
