Due to improper waste management, the global waste crisis continues to grow exponentially year after year, leading to soil, air and water pollution. By practicing a circular economy, we are able to eliminate waste by converting used materials into reusable products, rather than getting rid of them all together. According to the Independent Circularity Gap Report 2021, only 8.6 percent of undesired products are reported to be circular, whereas 91.4 percent is a waste. Also, out of the 90 million tons of materials that are extracted each year and used throughout the world, only 9 percent is recycled.
Adopting a circular economy saves greenhouse gas emissions and reduces pressure on the environment, and improves the security and supply of raw materials, increases competitiveness between companies and drives innovation. This in turn boosts the entire economy by creating more jobs and increasing the quality of life. It also provides consumers with long lasting and innovative products, and in the long run, saves consumers money.
A circular economy focuses on eliminating waste by reusing products and materials and transferring them into something else. This process is repeated as long as possible, or until the material is at the end of its useful life, and recycling is the only alternative. Overall, the circular economy is designed to reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture and as the very last result, recycle. By adopting a circular economy, individuals are able to eliminate waste generation and stop waste before it even begins. In fact, many companies have begun adjusting to the circular economy and designing their products to be reusable.
