The newest version of Apple’s iOS operating system will include an option for iPhone users to sign up to become an organ donor directly through their smartphone.
Tuesday, Apple announced plans to partner with Donate Life America to include this function in iOS 10. During the announcement of the new function, Tim Cook cited Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ lengthy, “excruciating” wait for a liver transplant.
Users will be able to press a button on their iPhone and enroll in the National Donate Life Registry. This registry is valid for anyone intending to become a tissue, eye or organ donor.
iOS 10 is expected to launch this fall along with macOS Sierra. The beta version of iOS 10 was made available to certified developers earlier this morning.
