Organizers of the Olympic and Paralympic games are aiming for sustainable awards instead of the traditional medals in the 2020 Olympics. In place of the gold, silver and bronze medals, organizers will create medals from recycled electronics.
Olympic games organizers have established collection sites around the country for Japanese citizens to donate their older mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices. In order to create 5,000 medals, the organizers will need to collect eight tons of metal from the donations.
Using recycled materials will not only decrease the cost of the medals, but promote a sustainability during the Olympics.
“There’s a limit on the resources of our earth, so recycling these things will make us think about the environment,” Koji Murofushi, sports director of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, said.
