Industry Standards

Industry standards are an important part of insuring a level playing field within the electronics recycling industry.  Companies contracting for electronics recycling services need to be confident that their IT recycling service provider is meeting standards for environmental compliance, safety, and worker health and that compliance has been verified by a third party.  HOBI is a strong supporter of the Responsible Recycling (R2) standard for electronics recyclers.

Developed through a multi-stakeholder process over a three year period, the R2 standard sets a benchmark for performance by an electronics recycling firm with our IT recycling programs. The guidelines list 13 principles to “help electronics recyclers ensure their material is handled safely and legally in the U.S. and foreign countries,” according to the EPA. The R2 guide urges better management of items potentially hazardous to the environment or human health, promotes re-use and recovery versus landfill or incineration, and offers guidelines to help stem export to developing countries.

HOBI is a certified R2 processor at both its Batavia, Illinois and Dallas facilities and is actively encouraging companies to only contract with electronics recyclers that meet this industry standard in their IT recycling programs.
